Camp Chef Makes Cabela’s Pellet Grills, Vista Splits in Oct – Nov

Camp Chef’s parent company, Vista Outdoor, had their earnings call yesterday for the quarter ending in June 2023. While they didn’t delve much into Camp Chef specifically, we did get some updates.

Store-in-Store Concept

We wrote an article last month about how strikingly similar Cabela’s new pellet grill line is to various Camp Chef products. It turns out that Camp Chef is in fact making them for Cabela’s. It was revealed on the earnings call as a “store-in-store” concept.

Split Update

Vista Outdoor is planning on splitting into two companies this year. Sporting Products will hold their shooting brands, while the soon to be named Outdoor Products company will hold other outdoor brands, like Camp Chef.

The Outdoor Products side of the business got a new CEO last week, and now we have a timeline update. The spin-off is expected to occur in late October or early November.

Financials

Vista Outdoor had lower sales and lower earnings compared to the same quarter last year. They said that their sales channels continue to clear through inventory in Outdoor Products, which has been an ongoing problem.

Gross Profit was lower for all brands in Outdoor Products. This was due to decreased sales volume and price.
