You have to admire what recteq is doing. They made a name for themselves with grills that have stronger builds and are fueled with pellets.

They are so committed to cooking with pellets that they released a pellet-fueled griddle. A truly unique offering in the griddle category.

They’ve now released the SmokeStone 480 pellet-fueled griddle which is a little smaller but brings the premium features of the bigger model. For size comparisons with other griddles on the market, the 480 is similar to a 28″ griddle.

Features and Specs

  • Retail price of $749.99 (check price)
  • Has an 18 lb pellet hopper for 12 hours of cooking
  • Temperature range of 300 degrees F to 600 degrees F
  • PID Controller for temperature handling

Premium Features

Cooking with pellets isn’t the only thing that sets the SmokeStone apart, it also has some premium features. It comes with a pre-seasoned griddle plate, which is nice because it saves you time, effort, and learning when your griddle first arrives.

It also has has the ability to cook with the lid down. It feels like you should be able to do that with other griddles but it’s a rarity in the space.

Other lids are made to be covers for the cold grills, so they use thin steel that would likely warm or discolor from the heat of being down on a hot griddle. Being able to cook with the lid down on the SmokeStone is an extension of the build quality of the griddle overall.

That’s a nice feature because it helps lock in the heat when cooking. It also will save you from having to track down a dome for cooking some foods.

Extra Flavor

Recteq built the griddle to run off pellets because of the extra flavor it brings. It’s the same reason they use pellets for their grills.

It might be a little unconventional but they swear that it adds extra flavor for griddling. That’s also another benefit of being able to cook with the lid down, it let’s you add some smoke to your food.

They accomplish pellet griddling through an specially engineering diffuser. Pellet grills have a deflector plate over the burn pot that’s a solid sheet of steel.

This one has holes of varying size spread out across the plate. This allows the grill to spread the heat out evenly on the bottom of the griddle.
