When you’re the best at something, all you can do is dethrone yourself. Like an F1 driver trying to shave seconds off a time trial, Current released a new version of their Model G electric grill for this grilling season. They sent me the new version to try it out.
The Model G was already the best choice for grilling on balconies, tight spaces, or for an alternative to propane, but Current refined the grill with the Model G+. It performs better for grilling and it has a couple little changes to make ownership better.
TL;DR
If you’re looking for a true grilling experience with an electric grill, there isn’t anything close to the Model G+. It’s designed to attract a whole new segment of grillers, and it doesn’t disappoint.
When I used to live in apartments, this would by far be my first choice for a grill that wouldn’t get me evicted. Even with more space and my pick of grills to choose from, I often turn to the G+ just because it delivers easy grilling.
Features and Specs
- Retail price of $1,099 (check price)
- Temperature range of 200 degrees F to 700 degrees F for versatility
- Two zone temperature control lets you cook food at different temperatures at the same time
- Temperature monitoring and control through the Current app
- Works on a traditional electrical outlet, so no custom wiring needed
- 12 foot power cord

Assembly
The Model G+, like all of the grills from Current Backyard, is built to make assembly easier. Many of the holes are slotted, so you can line bolts up without holding them in place.
They also pre-threaded many of the bolts. This makes the whole process go much quicker. They also include a nice ratcheting screwdriver that has extra bits in the handle. That means if you’re someone that doesn’t have many tools, you’re covered.
If you aren’t someone that normally puts things together, or get stuck at a step, I made a video showing it step-by-step.
Grilling
The grilling experience on this grill is much more like cooking on a gas grill than traditionally what you’d think of with an electric grill. You get that sizzling sound and, most importantly, that grilled flavor that you’re after.
It’s also very easy to cook on because you can set the temperature like an oven. It has two zones for cooking, so you can cook at the same temperature across the grill or you can cook at two different temperatures.
There’s also a warming rack on the top to keep your food warm when things are done at different times. It also gives you the ability to cook with indirect heat for things like reverse searing.
The grill comes with two temperature probes that plug into the grill to let you know when your food is done. This prevents you from burning food because you’re cooking to temp rather than a set time.
For searing, the grill can get all the way to 700 degrees F, which is really hot. I don’t think there’s much you’d want to cook hotter than that.
The power on this electric grill is pretty remarkable compared to other electric grills. I cooked on it all winter in Michigan, and it works well even in sub-freezing temperatures.
Tips and Tricks
To make grilling on the G+ a success, there are a few tricks that will make the experience go better. The first is, if you can, use a circuit that doesn’t have other things plugged into it.
I have a garage fridge that draws lots of power and is on the same circuit as my other outlets in the garage. When I plug in the grill, I make sure to unplug the fridge because it makes the grill heat quicker.
Keep in mind that while this is a great electric grill, it doesn’t quite have the power of gas. That’s important for when you’re flipping your food.
I always make sure to flip to a different spot on the grill because if you sear in a spot, it’s going to pull the heat from the cooking surface. A new spot wasn’t just cooled by your food.

Phone App
To make grilling easier and even more approachable, all of Current’s products wirelessly communicate with a phone app. You don’t have to cook with the app, I often don’t, but it’s available.
With the app, it will let you know when the grill is pre-heated, you can change the temperature, and you can view the temperatures from the probes. There are also recipes on there, you can set timers, and alerts. It’s a nice assistant to have, so you don’t have to watch the grill as much.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for an electric grill, or a grill that’s just easy to use, the Model G+ is a winner. It’s perfect if you live in an apartment, have a burn ban, or just don’t feel like messing with charcoal or propane. It gives you that grilled flavor that you’re after with an easy to use interface.
