Current Backyard is focused on making the best grilling experience for people with limited space, apartment balconies, and those that just want more convenience. They’re doing it through transforming the electric grill experience. The Model G2 is their latest model, so they sent me one to try out.
I’ve reviewed all the grills they’ve released, and every model keeps getting better. What I give Current tons of credit for is they identify any shortcomings with their products and work to address them.
Summary
The Current Model G2 electric grill gives a true grilling experience without the open flame. It’s not quite as powerful as propane but each model gets a little bit closer. It’s also an asset that it’s not propane because it you can control the grill with your phone to make grilling even easier. It should tell you something that I have lots of grills to choose from and I always seem to find myself grilling on the Model G2.

Assembly
The G2 is a pretty easy grill to put together. It comes with a nice ratcheting screwdriver and they designed it to be easy to assemble. I’d say it’s even easier than some Ikea furniture.
I didn’t make an assembly video for the G2 but I did for the G+. There are step-by-step instruction through BILT, but if you want another visual, watch my G+ video. The only real difference in assembly is the drawer that you have to put together on the G2.
Grilling
The G2 grills is the easiest grill to cook on. There’s no propane to mess with, no charcoal to light and tend to, you just plug it in and wait for it to warm up.
Every new grill that Current has released has gotten better and heating time and temperature uniformity. That’s true with the G2, it gets a little bit closer to propane grilling. It’s still not as powerful as gas but it’s more than powerful enough to do a great job grilling.

For best results, use it on its own circuit to maximize its power. For me, that means unplugging the fridge in my garage while I cook on it because it noticeably helps the heating time.
It’s also helpful to use the whole grilling area when you’re flipping your meat. The temperature doesn’t rebound quite as quickly as a gas grill, so when you flip, don’t put it down in the exact same spot that’s been cooled by the meat. You can see how I go through this in a video on the G+.
Beyond that, it’s just like cooking with propane. It has an infrared design, just like Charbroil’s gas grills, so you get lots of flavor from drippings steaming back up. You won’t be able to tell the difference between cooking on the G2 or a propane grill, it has the same flavor.
You can set two separate temperatures for each half of the grill. This lets you cook different food on each half, or heat up one side for searing.
Connectivity
A feature that makes all of the Current grills easier to cook with is they offer a connected grilling experience. You can monitor the temperature of your grill and change it from the app.
The grill also has temperature probes that you can plug into the display and monitor the temperature of your food from the app. That takes the guesswork out of doneness.

What I use the app the most for is monitoring grill temps. When I cook on it, I plug it in, go inside and start getting my food ready, then it sends an alert when the grill is pre-heated. It takes away feeling like you’re waiting on the grill.
Cleaning
The biggest advancement for me on this model is the ability to deep clean it. On the first Model G, you couldn’t really clean by the heating elements. They were in the way of that process.

The G2 solves that with removable heating elements, and removable stainless steel trays underneath them. You can easily take it all out and clean it in the kitchen, with is way better than other grills.

That’s the newest advancement, but the rest of the grill has the same easy cleaning. It has a cleaning cycle where the grill heats up really hot and crisps everything up.
Then the cooking grates easily come out in four manageable pieces. You can scrape off the big pieces of old food, then pop the cooking grates in the dishwasher. It’s a really nice way to clean, especially if you have the grill on a balcony.
Conclusion
When I lived in an apartment, I dreamed of the day that I could have a grill. It was the first thing I bought when I moved to a townhouse. With the Model G2, you can have a legit grill without moving. It’s the best electric grill, and an all around great grill, regardless of fuel type.
