Ooni broadened their product line last year with the release of their first mixer. The Halo Pro they launched wasn’t just any mixer, it was a spiral mixer that’s much better for making dough than planetary mixers, like you’d find from KitchenAid.

You’ll find spiral mixers in bakeries and commercial kitchens that are much larger and uglier. The Halo Pro kept the same functionality but had much better, and smaller, design.

Ooni has now expanded their mixer line by adding a smaller, lighter, and cheaper model called the Halo Core. For comparison to KitchenAid models, the Halo Core has a bowl size that’s roughly that of the KitchenAid Artisan mixer while the larger Halo Pro is comparable in bowl size to KitchenAid Bowl Lift mixers.

Features and Specs

  • Retail price of $599 (check price)
  • 4.8 quart bowl that will mix two to ten 12″ pizza dough balls in one batch
  • 20 speed settings
  • The motor adjusts as necessary to prevent overheating (unlike planetary mixers)

Spiral Mixer vs Planetary

Rather than blabbing on about the merits of a spiral mixer for dough cooking, Ooni created a great video on the subject. This is from when they released the Pro model last year.

Expanding the Pizza Oven Ecosystem

It’s a smart business move for Ooni to continue building out their product line around pizza, not just pizza ovens. Ooni makes a quality pizza oven that works well, but they face an issue like other companies with good product.

Their ovens work almost too well for the average consumer. Ooni continues to innovate with pizza ovens but there is a large swath of the population that is content with the first oven that they buy that’s going to last a long time.

Ooni offers every accessory imaginable for pizza ovens and pizza making, but this strategy zooms out a step further. It incorporates more of the pizza making ecosystem but it also focuses on making a better pizza.

Beyond that, bringing a better-looking spiral mixer to market creates an opportunity for new entrants to the Ooni ecosystem. There likely will be consumers looking for a better mixer that are introduced to Ooni pizza ovens through the mixer.
