Weber Bets On Smart Charcoal To Expand Its Connected Grilling Lineup

For nearly 75 years, the humble kettle grill has stood as a symbol of backyard Americana, unchanged in spirit, even as it quietly evolved in form. Now, Weber is taking its most iconic charcoal platform into the connected age.

“Going ‘smart’ is a natural next step in that evolution,” says Tess Vitale, Product Director, Charcoal, at Weber Blackstone.

The Evolution Of An Icon

The Weber Kettle has been refined for decades, but always with restraint. From the original domed design to innovations like the One-Touch cleaning system and hinged cooking grates, Weber focused on improving the charcoal experience without altering its essence.

The 2026 lineup marks a turning point: not a reinvention, but a modernization. Today’s grilling consumer wants the unmistakable flavor of charcoal with greater control and confidence, particularly for low-and-slow barbecue or overnight smoking sessions.

The answer: integrate smart temperature control and connectivity directly into the Performer platform, while introducing modular upgrades like the Kettle Smart Ring.

Vitale emphasizes that the timing of these innovations mattered. “The technology has matured to the point where it can truly improve the experience without overcomplicating it,” she says. “We didn’t want to add tech for tech’s sake.” Years of development went into ensuring that smart features feel seamless, intuitive and “worthy of the Weber name.”

This means making charcoal more accessible to new grillers while giving experienced pitmasters more precision.

Listening To A Passionate Fan Base

Few consumer brands command the loyalty of Weber’s outdoor cooking community. That enthusiasm translates into constant feedback via global research, direct customer input, grill communities and retail partnerships.

Several key features in the smart kettle lineup trace directly back to consumer requests:

  • Easier temperature management for long cooks
  • Faster charcoal startup and preheating, delivered through Rapidfire Assist mode
  • Flexibility to add smart functionality to existing grills via the Kettle Smart Ring
  • Remote monitoring without being tethered to a phone, through the Smart Hub Display

Perhaps most critically, customers were clear about what they didn’t want: a loss of authenticity.

Weber’s solution layers innovation onto heritage. Smart airflow control and monitoring enhance performance, but manual dampers and traditional cooking methods remain intact. The fire is still charcoal and the ritual is still hands-on.

A Smart Ecosystem, Not Just A Smart Grill

Weber’s competitive differentiation lies in integration. Rather than launching a standalone connected device, the company embedded its charcoal innovations within the broader WEBER CONNECT ecosystem.

Smart grills, probes, the Smart Hub and the companion app sync across fuel types, creating a cross-platform experience.

Engineering also sets Weber apart. The Wi-Fi-enabled LCD controller actively regulates airflow into the coals, managing the fire itself rather than merely reporting temperature. For long cooks and smoking applications, that distinction matters.

All of it is built atop the kettle’s proven foundation: a porcelain-enameled bowl, refined airflow system, hinged grate and a 10-year limited warranty.

“We’re not just adding connectivity,” Vitale says. “We’re delivering a fully integrated, high-performance charcoal system built on an iconic foundation.”

Retail And Consumer Response

Retail partners are signaling strong early enthusiasm, particularly for products that bridge traditional charcoal flavor with modern convenience. As connected home technology continues to expand, smart grilling is poised to follow.

Retailers see opportunity in:

  • Expanding smart grilling beyond gas and pellet categories
  • Driving accessory attachment—including probes, Smart Hub and the WEBER WORKS system
  • Engaging both first-time grillers and seasoned charcoal enthusiasts

Consumers, meanwhile, are responding to precision temperature control and remote monitoring—especially for long cooks that historically required constant supervision.

The Kettle Smart Ring, for example, has generated particular interest. Owners of an existing 22-inch Weber charcoal grill can upgrade without replacing their entire setup, creating an accessible entry point into smart grilling.

Building A Seamless Smart Future

Weber sees the smart kettle lineup as one piece of a larger connected ecosystem that includes the Smart Wireless Probe Plus, Smart Hub Display and the modular Kettle Smart Ring.

Meanwhile, the WEBER WORKS side table and rail system on Performer Smart models allows snap-on and drop-in accessories to keep tools, prep and serving items within arm’s reach. Vitale says that lineup will continue expanding based on consumer needs.

In an era when even refrigerators and thermostats are connected, Weber’s move signals something larger: charcoal cooking—long associated with patience, intuition and tradition—can embrace technology without sacrificing the soul of its brand.
