Backyard pizza ovens are great for making delicious pizza at home but there is a little bit of a learning curve. Between perfecting making dough and stretching it out then working a pizza peel for the proper cook, it can take some burned pies before you get a good one.

As the originator of commercially available backyard ovens, Ooni has some products to make the experience much easier. They previously released premade frozen dough balls that I always recommend, and now they’re getting rid of turning with a pizza peel with a rotating stone accessory.

A rotating stone makes getting an even cook much easier. Without one, you have to use a pizza turner or a pizza peel and rotate the pizza through the cook because the burner is cooking the spot closest to it the most.

Once you get the hang of rotating a pizza with a peel it makes you look cool like you’re really doing stuff. Convenient is the new cool though, at least that’s what I tell myself, and you can’t beat the convenience of just loading a pizza waiting a couple minutes and taking out a perfectly cooked pizza.

Plus, what makes Ooni’s new rotating stone different than others on the market is it turns on and off with a wave because it’s hands free. My kids don’t know that, and they’ll think I’m cool as I use magic to control my pizza oven.

The new accessory is for Ooni’s Koda 2 line only, which are all gas ovens. It includes the Koda 2, the Koda 2 Pro, and the giant Koda 2 Max. The stone system retails for $329, $349, and $399 (check prices) respectively due to the different sizes.

It’s an easy 20-minute install where you mount the battery pack on the bottom, then there’s a hole in the bottom of the oven to let the drive pin poke through. On top is where the rest of the coupling and the stone sit.

You get about 7 hours of continual use time from the batteries, which is a while for pizza making. You can also use the stone with cast iron and other cookware to cook other food a la meat on a rotisserie.

If you don’t yet have an Ooni pizza oven, they sell the new rotating stone in a bundle with Koda series ovens. That’s most cost effective way to buy.
