Current, an innovative brand focused on electric grills and pizza ovens, released the Model P pizza oven early this year. I’ve reviewed it and liked its capabilities, especially at high temperatures, but noted one limitation.
While it’s great at high temperatures, it was missing out on lower temperature cooking to increase its versatility. Current has fixed that limitation with an update this week making it an even more dynamic product.
The beauty of Current’s products is they focus on connectivity. Having that ability, they were able to unlock lower temperature cooking with a firmware update pushed to existing and new units. It’s great that they did it that way rather than just installing it on new models as an upgrade.
We’re always investing in innovations that make cooking easy and fun, no matter your environment or skill level. Whether in your kitchen, backyard or balcony, the Model P is now a go-to appliance, capable of turning out a different delicious dish every day of the week.

The greater temperature capability unlocked more cooking modes. Previously, it had Neapolitan, New York, Thin Crust and Frozen pizzas in addition to Hi and Lo Broil. The new cooking models include Detroit mode, Bake mode, and Sear mode.
Detroit Mode
CookOut News is based in Metro Detroit, so this one is near and dear to my heart. Growing up with Buddy’s pizza pre-internet, I didn’t know that everyone wasn’t eating square pizza with the sauce on top of the ingredients.
In the past 15 years, Detroit pizza has been more of a “thing” and it’s nice to see that the Model P now has a cooking mode for it. This will let everyone eat this delicious style of pizza.
The Model P will cook a Detroit-style pizza in just nine minutes. Plus, you don’t need to parcook the dough first, you can just add toppings on the raw dough and go. To help with cooking, Current also introduced a Detroit-style baking pan.
Bake Mode
Given the size and fast-heating properties of the Model P, it will heat up much faster than a regular oven. Now you can bake with it or cook anything you would in an oven. You can set the temperature range in Bake Mode between 250 degrees F to 450 degrees F.
Sear Mode
I’ll be interested to try cooking a steak on the new Sear Mode. It’s meant to cook a perfect steak in five and a half minutes at 680 degrees F.
With it’s top and bottom heating at the same time, no flipping is necessary. Cast iron should come in handy with this mode for added sear marks.
Indoor / Outdoor Oven
One thing to point out with the Current electric pizza oven is that despite more electic ovens coming to market recently, it’s the only one that is safe for outdoor use too. That means you can use it when it’s easier inside but also take it out when the weather is nice.
